Incompatible: server is using a newer protocol

I thought the .sh file I used to start Red Eclipse came attached to an updating routine. Does anyone know why I would suddenly have the default server give the message, "Incompatible: server is using a newer protocol"?

Update again... there probably some changes to netcode...

There are two version of Red Eclipse, master (development) and stable. By default the installers create a stable installation, but there are some servers out there using the development version, it is nothing to be worried about. You can check what version the updater is grabbing by checking the "branch.txt" in your installation folder. Also, make sure you don't have the version of the game provided by your package manager (Linux), we only support the bundles we distribute.

Three of the top 5 sorted for ping have incompatible protocol for me. None of them have any users right now. I think Master tends to draw all the default play, which was why I was sort of hoping to see it or something like it pegged to the top of the list that does not get fiddled with for dev. I am apparently not seeing the play.redeclipse.net one that is still on Master? The one that is not compatible is pegged to the top of my list of servers.

When sorted incompatible servers go to the end of the list and stable official server is on the top. Try explicitly pressing `sort now` button, or move the cursor from the browser list and wait for some time (update interval probably) - I think auto sort doesnt do anything while cursor is on the list to prevent you joining servers you didnt choose. Also try to decrease update interval.

Much better, thanks. I guess I just assumed it was sorting on its own. And I would sit there clicking "player, ping, player, ping," and wonder why nothing was changing. Just assuming there were no players sometimes.

Sounds like you changed your sort order and made player/ping more important than status (which should be first because it means "can I connect to it at all or not?").
