One note worth mentioning is that map thumbs that are saved along with map, do not showing water. This can be changed ?

yes they do? in bath for example the map image shows water. turn on all graphics options to the highest before you take a screenshot

screenshots taken by F12 key showns water, probably author used that (?). Everytime when I save a map and its water visible, then on next map load its like there no water at all.
Which settings? shaders quality? Texture quality? waterreflections and refractions ? Its always the same even on these settings maxed out. Strange :)

well, here's one i just took of bath by saving the map:

as you can see the shot is of terrible quality regardless of the fact that some visual elements seem to not be there. i'm sure it just has to do with the settings used when screenshots are automatically taken on a map save. qreeves could probably shed some light on it. i've split this into another thread as it's off topic

Materials don't show up in "mapshots" automatically taken by the game due to the way they are rendered. It is only a convenience function to make sure all maps have a thumbnail of some sort to identify them easier. When a map is finished the author should render a screenshot on highest possible settings (not something all of us are capable of doing when mapping).

Right, maybe we should make a note about map previews on the wiki. The automatic mapshots are just a quick placeholder, they don't show particles either and have little or no compression. I think you should stick with the default size of 512x512, but you can make the preview look much nicer and still end up with a significantly smaller png file. Don't use jpg or similar, as they won't be sent (/getmap). I don't know which "highest possible" settings are relevant for a snapshot of this relatively small resolution, but the main thing is that you're happy with the visuals of your preview.
