guistrut question

The guistrut command is used to insert spacings in menus. Depending on the nesting of guilist and/or the second argument, it adds a horizontal or vertical spacing.

The size of the spacing is measured in terms of the width or height of the currently active gui font. Okay, so a vertical spacing of 1 is equivalent to one text line. But the text width unit for horizontal spacings is less clear (unless it's a mono font).

I'd like to understand the idea of this. The trivial thing you may expect is to see the same measure for both directions (e.g. the font's height).

It can get tedious to compare the units for horizontal (and vertical) struts, text wraps and scaling factors for gui bars and images.

Both values are the maximum size a character can be in their respective directions. It probably made more sense before we added true width/height calculations and we just estimated with these values. However, I am not precisely sure what cascade effect changing the behaviour could create as it is still used heavily in the UI's (all the spacings would have to be redone).

Ah okay, so it's the maximum width of one character.
I agree that changing the way guistrut works makes no sense.
