Possible bug?

Postby Piggybear » 17 Sep 2014 04:13

Ok, so I finally made a server (YAY!), BUT, my gf is playing also and when she shoots me with smg1 and flamer1 I get no damage. (flamer1's "burning" still hurts me, but not the initial damage) All weapons besides those hurt me, and bots with those can also hurt me. If I can find out how, I'm going to attach a demo of us testing all weapons.

She's on the version in Lubuntu Software Center (1.4.5 I believe)
I'm on SVN -r6550 (so I can connect to older ones)

I don't know why this would happen, and I just thought I would bring it to your attention.
It might get fixed when I update her version tomorrow though.

Thanks for the help.

That demo doesn't actually show anything: after you join the game, you never shoot anything and never get shot at, while Sock Monkey wanders the level, shooting at a bot on her own team just before halftime and then not much else. She does wander into the side of the level where you are, but never has you in line of sight, and the game abruptly ends with 4:14 on the clock as both players leave.

Are you sure you got the right demo?

Nonsense. This is the demo you wanted.

For reference:

Ubuntu packages for Red Eclipse
Debian packages for Red Eclipse

Beware, it is 1.4-5 and not 1.4.5. -5 means it's the fifth revision of the package, which is not related to the version.

This is caused by a bug in the network stuff.

Pretty sure this is on quin's not-gunna-fix list.

Although you can usually quick-fix it by doing the command: /reconnect

We were both connected. It was like this every thime we played. That demo was just a full 10 minutes of testing all of the weapons and their secondaries. We are on the same LAN, so I don't think it was anything to do with network (she is litterally 2 feet from me). Thank you for your input though.

As an update, I haven't tested yet, but I did get her svn -r6550. We should be testing later on today.

The network sometimes gets desynced for some reason that, since the earlier releases, has never been really found out. That's what Bobbo meant. I'm also assuming it's that bug, for what it's worth.

yea it can manifest itself in a few different ways i've seen so far:

-you shoot your weapon but no-one else sees you fire it
-you can't pick up items on the map
-strange inexplicable movement of your player when you aren't pressing any keys (i've got a funny demo of this)

but a reconnect always fixes it, so maybe this is something else. did it happen on multiple servers?
For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. For every freedom, there is a new limit. For every joy, a new sorrow. For every act of kindness, an unspeakable cruelty. Where someone succeeds, someone else fails. A new association means a new separation. Loyalty meets treachery, honor breeds disgrace, free expression yields censorship. Each piece of knowledge forms new ignorance. Even death gives rise to new life. But the balance of existence is the beginning of wisdom and discernment.

This is JUST SMG1 and Flamer1, JUST her, JUST against me. Even disconnecting and reconnecting from the server doesn't help. This happens on every server, including local. I can hit here just fine with all weapons and their secondaries. She can hit everyone else including bots, just not me. All other people can hit me, all other people can hit her. If this IS in fact a network problem, it would surprise the hell out of me. It seems to me like it's some sort of incompatibility between 1.4-5 and svn -r6550, but only when on the same LAN. Hopefully soon we wont even need this "bug report" because 1.5 will be out.

EDIT: Update again, we just checked really quick, it does NOT happen when both of us run svn -6550 so the problem should be fixed with the release of 1.5.

Seems to boil down to 1.4 problems, closing issue.
