Animated textures?

Postby SniperGoth » 27 Sep 2017 23:37

I was thinking about this today....
Since we have animated caustics, does it mean that there's also support for animated textures, like let's say, a sequence of images ( tex1.png, tex2.png and so on), or is that a hardcoded-only thing?

You can create an animated texture by creating a single image with a set of frames in them and using the "<anim:delay,x,y,throb>" texture command. Example:
Code: Select all
"<anim:50,1,2,1>path/to/texture"

This sets up a texture animation at 1 frame per 50 milliseconds with 1 frame per X axis and 2 frames per Y axis with a throb effect (instead of looping, iterate backward to the start again).

A working example would be using a particle texture with multiple frames (the fire particle has 2 frames on both axes):
Code: Select all
"<anim:25,2,2>particles/fire"

Yep, made a custom .cfg file containing the fire/eleczap using the references here, exec'd it editing, but didn't do nothing to them in-game, stayed stactic.
Could you make a very basic map demonstrating the effect so we (the community) could grasp the concepts better?

animated-tex.cfg
simple texture configuration for testing the subject. Just /exec animated-tex.cfg while on a off-line editing match to use it.

Seems there was a bug, I've fixed it in both master and stable branches now :P

Thank you very much! This will be VERY useful...
Now we can have some custom animated hud elements, and not only that, but on Models too!
I thrown some of the caustic textures on the sword model to test it out, and it Works!

So, what does that mean? ... Custom animated huds for the game, possibly :P
