unnamed rocket launcher

Postby Unnamed » 09 Feb 2014 16:34

I made a rocket model:

I am a bit unhappy with the model. It is too big I think and it lacks of details.

You seem to hit the main issues right on the head with your own critique (based on screenshots, I haven't tried the model, I'm not sure how to), although I have a feeling it would probably still be an upgrade compared to the current Rocket model.

Yes the design is too boring :p

How about something more like this:

Or alternatively an homage to the doom rocketlauncher would be cool too:

I like that you are creating a new model for the RL, it really could use an update. Right now your model looks like a giant tube, try spicing it up a little and don't make it round all over its length.

TBH, none of the designs I have seen in this thread convince me. I think in order to be a RE-style, the RL would need to be unique and not present in any other game.
Design ideas:
-maybe hexagonal or pentagonal in shape, at least on a part of the tube?
-a tube that extends by sliding forward as you shoot?
-a grip that is horizontal and mounted below the main body of the rocket?
-a steam exhaust all around the tube of the rocket near the player-end?
-a light ring on the shooting end of the barrel that lights up orange when the rocket is shooting (alternative: loaded)?
-a few bowed energy lines around the back of the rocket, glowing orange or white?
-a rocket shorter than the one you designed?

That are my ideas for now, I love seeing the modeling progress though.
Edit: looking at the grip again, you might have a better design than me there :) how about making the orange part hexagonal? also, the tube is too big in diameter.

I want to change the existing model rather than making a new one.
Some changes:

The parts marked with arrows will move/rotate.

Still too big?

I also want to make different textures.

Looks a lot nicer viewed from this angle.

One thing I'd still change:
make the model less smooth in some places, for instance the round half-circle at the top for the sights would look much better imo if shaped like: /‾‾‾\
Same goes for the handle-struts at the bottom, make them more pronounced and dangerous looking by using corners, and it would look better.

Good work so far!

I kinda agree with this.

My first impression on seeing the new one was "shotgun", but after half a second it made sense. I guess it may be a bit big, seeing how it covers the crosshair? (At least, it looks like it does) Still, that looks a lot better than our current rocket model, which is practically a barrel.

I'm starting to think this is the reason why the current model is so stubby. We can't have the model cross over the cross hair like this.

Also, what's with the blue thing? It is very contrast-y, I don't think this colour/texture suits it.

It is much shorter, but it takes allmost the same space on the screen:
screenshot.0147.jpg

It would be better to move the hud hands I think.

Yeah, maybe that is the issue. Could also be a side effect of not using a separate field-of-view for the HUD hands?

Liking the redesign, some sections need a little bit of texture (e.g. the brown sections), but every thing else is done really well.

Target Lock-on screen? :)

There are many types/models of rocket launchers. to really improve the game, there should be a more detailed (not necessarily smaller) model of the existing launcher and another smaller rocket launcher as an actual weapon.

the 2nd launcher should be at the very most half as powerful as the existing launcher, and should take forever-and-a-day to reload (like at least 8 seconds). perhaps it could carry 2 rounds of these less powerful rockets, but then reload time should be increased to 10 seconds. perhaps it wouldn't be larger in size than say, an old fashioned musket.

the new model for the existing launcher should stay nice and large.

I don't really like the red 'giraffe pattern' on the side. I think it would be perfect with the texture as-is, but with that bit solid red, maybe slightly weathered.

i concur with dawn about the red pattern, it seems odd. is it a huge trouble to have the playermodel cradle the weapon underneath the shoulder?

Requires new animations for the player model, which is a lot harder than creating a weapon model.
